About Clay Mills Victorian Pumping Station

Located on the outskirts of Burton upon Trent, Clay Mills Victorian Pumping Station is an iconic site that stands as a tribute to 19th-century engineering. Originally constructed in the 1880s to improve sanitation in Burton, the pumping station played a pivotal role in preventing cholera outbreaks by managing waste from the town’s booming brewing industry. The station, with its four large beam engines, was built by the local firm Gimson & Company and was operational until the 1970s. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, it has been carefully restored to working order, preserving a piece of Burton’s history.

Visitor Experience

At Clay Mills, visitors can explore a unique blend of history and hands-on experience. The pumping station regularly hosts “steaming days,” during which the original beam engines and boilers are brought to life, demonstrating the power of Victorian steam technology. Knowledgeable guides are on hand to share stories of the site’s history and its significance in the fight against disease and pollution.

The station also houses a variety of exhibits, including rare industrial tools, workshops, and displays on the history of sanitation and engineering. Families can enjoy interactive activities, and for younger visitors, there are children’s trails and activity sheets available.
