The Cock Inn

Perched in an elevated position on the edge of the pretty village of Hanbury, The Cock Inn offers visitors breathtaking views across the Dove Valley towards the Weaver Hills and Derbyshire Dales. This much-loved country pub combines stunning scenery, seasonal food and a warm community atmosphere, making it a memorable place to eat and drink in East Staffordshire.

With a focus on locally sourced ingredients and quality cooking, The Cock Inn serves a tempting selection of seasonal dishes, traditional pub favourites and beautifully prepared meals. Guests can enjoy a relaxed lunch, an evening meal or a leisurely Sunday roast, all complemented by a great choice of drinks including real ales, wines and cocktails.

The pub’s fascinating history, welcoming atmosphere and spectacular countryside setting make it a destination in its own right. Following the devastating RAF Fauld explosion in 1944, The Cock Inn became a symbol of resilience and community spirit, continuing its long tradition as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Perfectly placed for walkers and countryside explorers, with several routes beginning and ending at the pub, The Cock Inn is an ideal stop after enjoying the surrounding Staffordshire landscape. Whether visiting for great food, a quiet drink or simply to admire the views, guests can enjoy a true taste of country hospitality.

As pubs go, The Cock Inn isn’t old, but it’s a pub with heart, history and a mistaken identity.

When the dump went up on 27 November 1944, The Derby Telegraph reported that “The old Cock Inn was practically demolished, but the tap room remained intact and the landlady began serving with the remaining supplies and glasses as soon as possible. Above, a bed protruded crazily from the wall of a shattered bedroom.”

The dump was RAF Fauld, a store for 44,000 tonnes of explosives, which accidentally detonated causing catastrophic damage to Hanbury village, the Cock Inn and surrounding farms.

But some things never change, and The Cock Inn at Hanbury is still all about people and the community. It’s about laughing out loud with friends, spending time with family, eating seasonal locally sourced food, hosting your next party and enjoying a quiet drink.

There are three great walks that begin and end at The Cock Inn, which is a great excuse to pop in for lunch and a pint. For The Hanbury Walk Map and other East Staffordshire walks see here… Walk Maps – DISCOVER EAST STAFFORDSHIRE
