The Olde Royal Oake

Step into the Olde Royal Oak in Burton upon Trent’s historic Market Place and discover a pub with a fascinating past, where centuries of history meet local folklore and a few intriguing ghost stories.

This characterful three-storey, half-timbered building is thought to be around 300 years old, with parts of the rear dating back to around 1640. Its location in the Market Place places it at the heart of Burton’s historic town centre, close to the site of the former Burton Abbey.

The pub is associated with Burton’s former prison history, with local tradition telling of an old Market Place gaol and lock-up. Stories of prisoners and gaolers have subsequently become woven into the building’s colourful folklore, alongside tales of mysterious tunnels, ghostly priests and other unexplained encounters.

One of the most intriguing characters connected with Burton is Alice Gooderidge, the Stapenhill Witch. Her remarkable 1597 story, involving a young Burton boy and accusations of witchcraft, is recorded in a contemporary account and has become an enduring part of the town’s heritage and folklore.

The surrounding area has inspired plenty of other tales too, including the poignant legend of a little girl said to haunt the Abbey and riverside in search of her grandfather.

Whether you’re fascinated by history, enjoy a good local legend or simply love discovering unusual places, the Olde Royal Oak offers a memorable glimpse into Burton’s lesser-known past.

Discover the stories behind one of Burton’s most intriguing historic pubs, and see what you might uncover in the Market Place.
