Community Art Project | The Yarn Tree
Get Crafty This Half Term with The Yarn Tree in Burton
Families are invited to get creative this half term by taking part in The Yarn Tree — a vibrant community art project that will see a life-size tree made entirely from colourful pompoms and wool tassels displayed in Burton town centre.
Inspired by public art specialists Making Trails, The Yarn Tree celebrates creativity, community spirit, and colour. Each pompom and tassel will be handmade by local residents and brought together to form a stunning, eye-catching tree sculpture for everyone to enjoy.
The project marks the launch of Crafty Attic, Burton’s brand-new makers’ market and creative hub, opening in Market Place on Monday 20th October. To get involved, families can collect a free crafting pack from Crafty Attic (upstairs in Helen’s Bake House and Tea Rooms) between Monday 27th and Friday 31st October. You can make your pompom or tassel at the venue, or return it by Sunday 2nd November to be included in the final display.
Crafty Attic owner Helen Wheat said she was delighted to collaborate with Making Trails on such a fun and inclusive project:
“The Crafty Attic is all about encouraging creativity in the town and showcasing the amazing local makers and artisan crafters. This event gives families and adults a free, fun half-term activity and the chance to be part of an exciting public art project right here in Burton.”
Crafty Attic is the first of its kind in Burton — a welcoming hub for local creativity, offering a dedicated haberdashery with ribbons, threads, wool, and buttons, plus retail space for over 30 independent artisans and makers. Makers can rent shelves or display cases for between £15 and £45 per month, providing an affordable way to sell in a prime town centre location. Plans also include workshops and specialist creative events throughout the year.
Tilley Bancroft, owner of Making Trails and creative lead on The Yarn Tree, said:
“Our aim is to create a colourful public art piece that reflects Burton’s community spirit. By bringing everyone’s creations together, we’ll form a beautiful, vibrant symbol of creativity and togetherness that everyone can enjoy.”
Based in Russell Street, Making Trails was founded in 2020 and creates bespoke 3D sculpture trails for towns, cities, and events across the UK — designed to encourage tourism, increase footfall, and spark civic pride.
