TV star opens Burton’s new wool shop – Crafty Attic

TV star set to unveil new specialist wool shop and haberdashery as local knitters encouraged to support charity campaign.
Stephanie Thompson, star of Tom Daley’s Channel 4 show The Game of Wool which is on the hunt to find Britain’s Top Knitter, will be in Burton on Saturday 6th December to officially open the Crafty Attic, above Helen’s Bakehouse and Tearooms, in Market Place.
The 65-year-old, who runs online business coaching service Stephanie Thompson Coaching and is a self-confessed knitting nut from Derby, was chosen from thousands of contestants to take part in the first of its kind knitting show. Author of Your Yarn, Your Way, a series of knitting inspired business books to support creative entrepreneurs, she will be sharing her love of all things wool as she mark’s the opening of Burton’s brand-new woolly haven.
Helen Wheat, who created the Crafty Attic to help support crafters in the town, said it was an honour to have Stephanie join them for the celebratory event and encouraged town knitters to grab their wool and needles to join the knit and natter style social with Stephanie.
She said: “Crafty Attic is all about supporting the town’s creativity. From the makers’ market with rent a shelf space for local artists to the dedicated wool and haberdashery, there isn’t anything else like it in the area. We are so excited to have Stephanie come and join us in sharing her knitting passion and knowledge. It will just be a great way to celebrate all things wool in the town.”
The Crafty Attic features a local makers’ market with independent gifts and homeware as well as a specialist wool and haberdashery store. A valuable resource for local knitters it is designed to be the go-to place for specialist wool, threads and buttons as well as knitting or sewing supplies. With new stock regularly coming in and connections with top suppliers such as longstanding British brand Stylecraft, renowned for its quality and trend setting styles, the store can source any sewing or knitting needs.
They are also supporting the Burton and Derby Hospitals’ neonatal knitting appeal and are calling on knitters to get involved by creating hats, bonding blankets, socks and cardigans which can be used to help the premature baby unit. Patterns are available in store with the Crafty Attic collecting finished designs to take to the hospital at the end of the year.
Stephanie, who caught the judges eye with her passion for knitted jumpers, got down to the last 8 in the competition for the crown of the Uk’s top knitter unfortunately getting cast off in episode 3 on Sunday (November 16th) following the holiday deck chair challenge. She said: “Knitting is my way to relax. When you are knitting and concentrating on the pattern, you don’t think about anything else. It is stress free. It is lovely to have the chance to meet people who share my passion and it is great to have resources like the Crafty Attic in the area which are so passionate and knowledgeable about knitting.”
Joining Stephanie to open the Crafty Attic will be representatives from specialist wool supplies Stylecraft handing out patterns and discussing latest trends and knitting knowledge. Knitters, crocheters and crafters are being encouraged to come along and find out more with the event held from 12pm till 2pm at Crafty Attic, above Helen’s Bakehouse and Tearooms, in Market Place. Stephanie is due to officially cut the ribbon and open the store at 1pm but will be on hand to share tips and talk knitting throughout the event.
The Game of Wool started on Sunday 2nd November and will crown its winner on Sunday 21st December. Ten talented knitters were chosen to take part in the different challenges which will all be judged by knitting designers and experts Di Gilpin and Shelia Greenwell who are known for their work with the likes of Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith and Nike.
Hosted by knitting royalty Tom Daley, the show puts the 10 contestants through their paces to find ‘Britain’s Best Knitter’.
