Few events capture the spirit of Burton upon Trent quite like Burton Regatta. Returning for its landmark 160th year on 11–12 July 2026, this much-loved event combines thrilling rowing action, community pride and a fantastic atmosphere on the banks of the River Trent.
For generations, Burton Regatta has been a highlight of the town’s summer calendar, bringing together competitors, spectators and visitors for a weekend packed with excitement. Whether you’re a rowing enthusiast or simply looking for a great day out, there’s something special about watching the River Trent come alive with racing crews, cheering crowds and a vibrant festival atmosphere.
A Burton Tradition Since 1866
For 160 years, Burton Regatta has been woven into the fabric of the town. The River Trent has long played an important role in Burton’s history, helping shape the town’s growth and identity. Today, the regatta continues that connection, celebrating the river while creating new memories for future generations.
The nationally recognised regatta rooted in Burton, attracts rowing clubs from across the UK and is regarded as one of the finest remaining traditional river regattas in the country. It is also one of only a handful of river-based regattas still held in the East Midlands
The exact individual or group who first conceived Burton Regatta isn’t clearly recorded in readily available histories, but we do know that the event is one of the oldest annual sporting events in the country. It was created during the Victorian era, when rowing was becoming increasingly popular across Britain and many towns with major rivers were establishing their own regattas.
What is known is that Burton already had a strong rowing tradition before the regatta began. Evidence shows rowing clubs were active on the River Trent in Burton upon Trent as early as the 1840s, and competitive rowing was already taking place on the river. Burton Leander Rowing Club traces its origins to around 1848 and competed in rowing events in Burton before the regatta became established.
The regatta likely emerged from this growing local rowing scene, organised by Burton’s rowing community and civic leaders who wanted to create a major annual sporting event on the River Trent. Over time, it evolved into the prestigious event we know today and is now organised by the Burton Regatta Association with support from Burton Leander Rowing Club and Trent Rowing Club.

The River Trent Is the Star
Unlike many modern rowing competitions that take place on purpose-built lakes, Burton Regatta is held on the River Trent itself. Competitors race through the town’s historic Regatta Meadows, giving spectators a unique opportunity to watch rowing in a natural riverside setting.
The regatta follows the classic “Oxford versus Cambridge” style format, with two boats racing side-by-side. This head-to-head format creates exciting, easy-to-follow races that are ideal for spectators.
Floods, Wars and Social Change. Over its 160-year history, the regatta has witnessed enormous changes in Burton and Britain. It has continued through the rise and decline of the brewing industry, and changes in amateur sport. Even in modern times, river conditions have occasionally forced cancellations, demonstrating the challenges of hosting a traditional river regatta.
Reflecting Burton’s character, perhaps most importantly, Burton Regatta reflects the town itself. The River Trent helped Burton become the global brewing capital, and the regatta celebrates that historic relationship between the town and the river. Few places in Britain can claim a sporting event that has remained so closely connected to its landscape and community for 160 years.

An International Celebration
One of the highlights of the regatta is the annual Town Race between Burton upon Trent and its twin town, Lingen in Germany.
Taking place during Saturday’s lunchtime programme, this special race celebrates the strong friendship between the two communities and adds an international flavour to the weekend. It’s a fantastic example of how sport can bring people together and strengthen connections across borders.
