Unearth Staffordshire’s Newest Golden Treasure: The Incredible Ellastone Gold Fastener
What if we told you one of Staffordshire’s most exciting treasures had been hiding beneath a field in East Staffordshire for 3,000 years?
Discovered near the charming village of Ellastone, this extraordinary solid gold Bronze Age fastener is one of the county’s most remarkable archaeological finds. Dating back to around 1000–900 BC, it offers an incredible glimpse into life in Staffordshire long before castles, cathedrals and even the Romans arrived.
Now safely secured for the county, the Ellastone Gold Fastener will soon take pride of place at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, giving visitors the chance to see one of Britain’s rarest prehistoric treasures up close.

A Discovery Worth Celebrating
In 2023, experienced metal detectorist Jonathan Needham was searching farmland near Ellastone when his detector picked up something extraordinary.
Hidden beneath the soil was a beautifully crafted object made entirely from solid gold. Realising its importance, Jonathan reported the discovery through the Portable Antiquities Scheme, where experts confirmed it was an exceptionally rare Bronze Age treasure.
Finds like this don’t happen every day—in fact, discoveries of this type are incredibly uncommon, making the Ellastone Gold Fastener one of Staffordshire’s most exciting archaeological stories in decades.

So… What Exactly Is It?
Despite its small size, the Ellastone Gold Fastener would have made a big impression 3,000 years ago.
Experts believe it was worn to fasten an elegant cloak or ceremonial garment, while also showing off the wearer’s wealth, influence and status. Think of it as the Bronze Age equivalent of designer jewellery, a stunning accessory that announced someone was important.
Crafted entirely from solid gold, it’s likely to have belonged to a powerful community leader, respected warrior or someone of significant importance.
A Masterpiece of Bronze Age Craftsmanship

It’s hard to imagine creating something so beautiful without modern tools, but that’s exactly what Bronze Age craftspeople achieved.
Using simple bronze and stone tools, skilled goldsmiths carefully shaped and decorated this remarkable object by hand. Their craftsmanship has stood the test of time, surviving for three millennia beneath the Staffordshire countryside.
Why Is Everyone So Excited?

The Ellastone Gold Fastener isn’t just beautiful, it’s exceptionally rare.
It is:
- Over 3,000 years old.
- One of only eight known examples from England and Wales.
- The first of its kind ever discovered in Staffordshire.
- The first example found anywhere in Britain for almost 30 years.
Its discovery is helping archaeologists build a bigger picture of Bronze Age life, revealing that people living in or travelling through Staffordshire were far wealthier and more connected than previously imagined.

One of the most fascinating things about the Ellastone Gold Fastener is that nobody knows exactly why it ended up buried underground.
Was it accidentally dropped by its owner? Was it carefully placed as a sacred offering? Or was it once part of an ancient burial site that has long since disappeared?
For now, the answers remain a mystery, adding even more intrigue to this incredible discovery.
A Treasure Staying Close to Home
Following its valuation of £150,000, there was a chance this nationally important treasure could have left Staffordshire.
Thankfully, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign supported by local people and heritage organisations, the Ellastone Gold Fastener will remain in the county where it was discovered.
It will soon go on display at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, joining other internationally significant treasures, including the famous Staffordshire Hoard.
