A series of back-to-back informal listening sessions in The Shop. Each session invites a local musician, music lover or cultural figure to bring a vinyl record, play it front to back, and open up a conversation about it with whoever turns up. No expertise required; just people, records, and the conversations music starts.

The format is simple but endlessly varied — a different guest each session brings a different record, a different set of memories, and a conversation that couldn’t have happened any other way.

Carl North

Carl North’s sound is like a well-poured pint – refreshing yet familiar, with notes drawn from far beyond home soil. The music borrows from the rich wells of Americana, Blues, Country & Soul, sonic influences that have brewed together with Carl’s own British sensibilities over time. Performing both solo & as a full band with The Pointing Dogs, Carl is a well versed powerhouse performer and writer.

Jonnie Makin Bio

Burton DJ Jonnie Makin has been a fixture on the local scene since his teens, building a reputation across venues including The Leopard, Brewers Bar and The Corner House before crossing paths with a then-unknown Nathan Dawe, taking him under his wing, putting on nights together, and eventually playing Birmingham’s O2 Academy to a sold-out crowd of 3,000. After stepping away from the scene, a call from Rose Melba in 2024 to DJ a Sonic Boom silent disco brought him back and opened the door to a new chapter: pure vinyl sets with Onefortheroad, a monthly residency at Isabel’s, and his own vinyl night, Night Beats. A lifelong record collector and passionate supporter of local music, Jonnie is exactly the kind of person this event was made for.
