This walk explores the site of the WWII Fauld Explosion site, which occurred November 27th 1944. 4,000 tones of high explosives stored in the chambers of an unused gypsum mine was accidently detonated. Causing catastrophic damage to the Village of Hanbury and where over 70 people lost their lives. While you can’t access the site, you can walk the perimeter, which conveys the enormity of this devastating explosion.
This 1.5 mile walk starts and ends this walk at the footpath which runs beside The Cock Inn, Hanbury’s beer garden. The Cock Inn at Hanbury is a traditional country pub with good ale, good seasonal locally sourced food, a great selection of spirits and a friendly atmosphere with the best views. Elevated above the Dove Valley, with spectacular views towards the Weaver Hills and the Derbyshire Dales.
