Visitor data collected through apps and surveys shows that this year’s event nearly doubled the attendance of previous sculpture trails. The impact? An impressive £600,000 boost to the local economy! Visitors spent an average of £20 each at nearby shops and cafés, demonstrating the trail’s powerful draw and its contribution to local businesses.
This innovative event not only celebrated the town’s rich heritage, but also provided a fun and interactive way for both residents and tourists to engage with Burton’s vibrant community and economy.
Barrels were strategically placed at prominent heritage sites throughout the town, including the Town Hall, St. Peter’s Church, and Stapenhill Gardens, adding a rich cultural layer to the trail. Each barrel showcased the creative talents of local artists, with themes such as the rumoured Holy Grail treasure of the Knights Templar, said to be hidden in a labyrinth of tunnels beneath Sinai Park House in Burton-on-Trent, bringing history and art together in a truly unique experience.
The campaign reached an impressive 72,000 people on Facebook alone. Tilley Bancroft, owner of Burton-based Making Trails, the team behind this and two previous local trails, shared her excitement: “The Burton Barrel Roll has been a phenomenal success, far exceeding our expectations. It was fantastic to witness not only more visitors flocking to the area but also local residents enjoying their town in such a creative and interactive way.
“As high streets evolve and people look for fresh ways to explore their communities, trails like these offer a dynamic and engaging experience.”
The barrels from this year’s event are now set to be sold off next month.
The Burton Barrel Roll Auction is scheduled for Tuesday, 22 October, at the Brewhouse Arts Centre. There is a reserve price of £400 per barrel and all proceeds will help fund a permanent art installation in the town.
