Burton’s oldest surviving building, Sinai Park House, opens its gates for a special Heritage Open Days event on Friday 12th September, as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme – England’s largest festival of history and culture, celebrating hidden places and heritage treasures across the country.

This fascinating site tells a story shaped by centuries of history, from Roman influence and medieval monks to English Civil War activity and aristocratic ownership – all of whom have left their mark on the house and surrounding landscape.

Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations of traditional building crafts, with the opportunity to try their hand at stone masonry, wattle and daub, and historic brick bonding techniques. With active restoration work continuing through 2025, openings like this are exceptionally rare, making this a unique opportunity to discover one of Burton’s most intriguing heritage sites, once home to the Burton monks.

Explore the natural healing springs and Chalybeate waters of the Lord’s Well, and walk across a Scheduled Monument – the historic moat that surrounds Sinai.

Guests are invited to join one of three timed guided tours throughout the day, offering insight into the restoration project and the stories of the people who once lived and worked at Sinai. Tours begin at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm (pre-booking required). Please arrive promptly, as access must be carefully managed due to the condition of parts of the site.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the open space, with refreshments also available in support of the Friends of Sinai Park House Trust.
