Discover the Washlands Walk – Burton upon Trent

Step off the beaten path and into nature at the Washlands Walk in Burton upon Trent—a unique trail that combines riverside tranquillity, industrial history, and community renewal. This little-known gem is perfect for visitors looking to explore the town’s quieter side with stunning natural scenery and engaging heritage.

The Washlands is a floodplain network beside the River Trent, stretching around a mile from Burton Bridge to Branston Water Park. This circular walk spans approximately 4 miles (6.5km) and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace, with sturdy footpaths and bridges that are accessible for most people, including families and casual walkers.

Floodplain Features: Once a working meadow used for seasonal grazing and haymaking, the Washlands have always been vital to Burton’s flood management. After heavy rainfall, the area fills with water, acting as a natural river overflow.

Post-industrial Rejuvenation: The early 2000s saw the transformation of derelict land into a thriving green corridor. Thanks to a joint project by the Environment Agency, East Staffordshire Borough Council, and local volunteers, the site was reshaped with wetland pools, wildlife-friendly planting, and public art.

Brewery Connections: Along the route, you’ll pass the Bass Water Tower and the Trent & Mersey Canal—symbols of Burton’s long-standing brewing history and its role in canal network transport.

The Washlands Walk offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Burton’s town centre. It’s an extraordinary example of how nature, flood protection, and community heritage can come together in an accessible city green space. Ideal for families, dog-walkers, and anyone looking to reconnect with nature just minutes from town.
